IMPORTANCE OF BADRINATH
Temple of Lord Vishnu (Badri Vishal) is located here. Saint AdiShankaracharya attained freedom from incarnation in this region.It is located at an elevation of 3,133 metres above sea level in the chamoli district of Uttarakhand .This Dham was established by AdiShankaracharya in the 9th century very close to the ALAKNANDA river.It remains open between the months of October to may and closed during the winter months because of heavy snowfall. In the religious scriptures of Padma Purana the surroundingarea of this temple is famous for housing holy possessions, all the mountain ranges surrounding this place have been named in Mahabharata. It is believed that pandavas crossed badrinath and Mana town on their way to heaven, in mana town there is a cave where VED VYAS is believed to have written Mahabharata and most important belief is that lord Vishnu meditated here while goddess Lakshmi sheltered him from the sun by standing next to him,she turned into BADRI VISHAL and shiva became the BADRI NATH.

This is the most sacred spot where Ganga ,the stream of life, touched the earth for the first time.she took the form of a river to absolve sins of king bhagiratha’s predecessors,following his severe penance of centuries. Lord shiva received into his matted locks to minimize the immense impact ofher fall from then she came to know BHAGIRATHI at her legendary source.
